On their 13 day mission and over the course of 5 spacewalks they completed an extreme makeover of the orbiting observatory. They installed the Wide Field Camera- 3, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, repaired the Advanced Camera for Surveys and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, as well as a number of maintenance activities. The Hubble Space Telescope story has been a fascinating study in public policy, engineering, ethics, and science. For the first time on orbit the Hubble has a full complement of instruments capable of performing state-of-the-art observations from the near infra-red to the ultraviolet end of the spectrum. The early results of the new and repaired instruments hint at a bright scientific future for Hubble and will be presented in the talk as well as a narrative of the adventures on orbit. Dr. John M. Grunsfeld was recently appointed Deputy Director of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI). This excerpt draws from a larger thesis work reinterpreting portraits of the femme fatale in performance. This segment re-visions the private, inner life of Mary Magdalene. Research for this work included review of 6 different translations/interpretations of The Gospel of Mary, also known as the Berlin Codex. This document was found buried in Akhmim, Egypt and was lost until January of 1896. Once translated from its Coptic language, its revelations (incomplete and partially destroyed) instigated intense theological debate about the role of Mary Magdalene and the founding principles/intentions of Christianity. This dance explores the alternative scholarship surrounding the inferred intimate relationship of Mary (Miriam) and Jesus (Yeshua)—both as adepts in esoteric exploration and visionaries regarding the evolutionary potential of human form. The score is a Byzantine nativity hymn attributed to the 4th century Church of Antioch and sung in Arabic. The astonishing and remarkable vocalist is Sister Maria Keyrouz. A culinary arts education is expensive. But just because you don't have the money to pay for it, doesn't mean you can kiss your culinary career dreams goodbye. Regardless of who you are or where you're from, there's always an opportunity to getting that degree.

Culinary arts scholarship for international students is being offered by some culinary institutes. There are several culinary arts schools that provide financial aid to qualified individuals. After a two year wait, Joel's Crazy Tricks Volume 3 has finally been put together! In my opinion it outdoes the others significantly in all of the tricks/craziness/editing/quality! It uses 185 different videos which took over 80 hours to put together. It is filmed across 47 different locations from all over the world. For those who have not seen the first two, this series is pretty much a summary of what I get up to and is in a way my 'showreel'. It includes: gymnastics, pole vaulting, cliff jumping, rope swinging and street tricking. Some of it is Damien Walters inspired, so thanks mate! I'll keep trying to copy! Music is mostly by Lunatica. The first song is 'The Search Goes On', the second song is 'The Spell'. The song playing during the credits is 'Eternal' by Evanescence Since filming the second one I won a prize which enabled me to buy a much better camera, new computer and great new software. I really like this software both for its excellent feature set, and the intuitive UI. I also tried Photoshop Elements which came with my tablet. But I'm really glad I bought this software. It allowed me to immediately start painting. Photoshop elements has many more features, but it's also designed to be a "work" application. ArtRage Deluxe feels like a "play" program, that is very easy to experiment and prototype with. And, the fact that it has fewer tools is actually an advantage for beginners in my opinion. Instead of reading help documents, you can start playing right away! I will most certainly try their pro versions once I have gotten mileage out of this one :)

Managing Lasik Flap Buttonholes

From all Lasik flap complication, LASIK flap buttonholes are the ones that lead most often to loss of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). Why do they happen? Thin, irregular and perforated flaps seem to result from a common etiology; an inadequate coupling of the blade to the cornea. Steep corneas have been compared to tennis balls that would buckle centrally upon applanating pressure. This results in a central dimple missed by the blade leading to a buttonhole. Another theory is that higher keratometric values offer increased resistance to cutting when applanated, leading to upwards movement of the blade.

The latter is probably more applicable to keratomes with lower oscillation rates. Similarly, flat corneas may result in a thin and/or small flap as they could be below the adequate cutting level in certain locations. Inadequate blade to cornea coupling is often due to poor suction (sunken globe/small diameter corneas with inadequate suction ring placement, conjunctival incarceration in the suction port...). Non-angled blades have equal chances of moving upwards towards the surface or downwards towards the stromal side if faced with resistance. On the other hand, inferiorly angled blades are more likely to be driven towards the stroma. If a buttonhole is encountered (especially centrally), most surgeons prefer to abort the procedure, replace the flap and re cut a deeper flap (20-60 ?m deeper) approximately 10-12 weeks later. While some advocate proceeding with scraping the epithelium and performing a PRK laser ablation, we believe this approach may not be feasible in higher myopes due to the appearance of unexpected haze.

A higher index for epithelial ingrowth should maintained around the margins of the buttonhole. The incidence of perforated flaps (as well as thin and irregular ones) may be reduced if the surgeon ensures adequate suction, inspects the blades and adjusts the keratome plate thickness according to corneal curvature. Other helpful measures include ensuring adequate intraocular pressure before cutting the flap. Measurement may be most valuable with a pneumotonometer as other means were reported to provide imprecise readings at times. Care should be taken to avoid conjunctival clogging in the suction port, which could lead to discrepancy between the intraocular pressure and the suction pressure recorded on the microkeratome vacuum console. Newer microkeratomes have a safety mechanism to automatically abort the procedure or to activate additional suction but are also prone to similar problems if IOP measurements are not obtained to ensure adequate suction. Some surgeons inspect the microkeratome blade under the operating microscope before engaging it in the suction ring in order to rule out manufacturing or other preoperative damage to the blade. It is best to keep the microkeratome away from hard surfaces after assembly to avoid subsequent blade damage.

The protean career is a process which the person, not the organization, is managing. It consists of all of the person's varied experiences in education, training work in several organizations, changes in occupational field, etc.

The protean career is not what happens to the person in any one organization. The protean person's own personal career choices and search for self-fulfillment are the unifying or integrative elements in his or her life. The criterion of success is internal (psychological success), not external.

Viewed in this light, a career is an ongoing sequence of events, some of which may have little or nothing to do with money or prestige. Also, according to this view, a career extends over the entire work life. What happens in one year or in one corporation is just a small piece of the rich career mosaic. Finally, determining whether or not a career is successful is up to the individual. If people are happy with the way their careers turn out, how can anyone say that their careers are failures?

What is a scholarship? A scholarship is an amount of money applied straightforwardly to your college costs that you are awarded based on academic good point, financial want, or a combination of the two. Scholarships may be a one-occasion award, or they may lengthen over some semesters or years. If they are not one-occasion sum of money, so probably you need to keep a definite GPA to keep the scholarship.

For what basis can I obtain scholarships? Most people think of scholarships as rewards for A students - that's true for a little percentage of scholarships. However, most scholarships are based on various qualities and accomplishments: academics, test scores, ethnic origin, employer, career purposes, selection of major, etc. And while many scholarships are based on your plus points in competition with other students, many scholarships, first and foremost those awarded by colleges, are based on financial need as well as your brilliance, or just financial need by itself.

Where should I look for scholarships?

Look Online. Scholarship search databases hold a lot of scholarships. Many won't be quite right for you, or are very small awards; but others may really suit you. But don't apply to a hundred scholarships just because they're there. Look In Your Own Locality. There are local communities, clubs, local newspaper, the power plant, etc. They may award scholarships to college students in area. To find these scholarships, you'll need to seek. Read your local paper, especially the community news. Call local agencies and ask if they sponsor any college scholarships. Call local television station and large employers in your area to ask that. Sometimes, some employers provides small scholarships; so have your parents ask their employers if there are scholarships for children of employees.

Speak With Your College Authority. By talking to the persons in the office of the college, you may be able to get some guides on scholarships that are detailed to students. Let them know when you speak to them how serious you are, and they will probably give you help. If you're going to do great effort financially, let them in the office know this. There are programs to help students who really wants. People in the office will know how to get that money.

What is Open Access?

The Open Access Movement is the effort to make scholarly research articles free to the public online. According to Public Knowledge, "the OA movement has focused on peer-reviewed journal articles and their preprints." This is because scholarly journals don't pay royalties to authors and most of their research is funded by taxpayers. One method for providing open access is self-archiving. Self-archiving is when someone submits a digital document on the web in order to provide open access to it.

Along with the open access movement comes the open source movement. The open source movement is composed of various individuals who feel the best way to produce sophisticated bug-free software is to bring together skilled programmers who would work for free (Cherian, 2000). The software provides a source code for the user which meets the Open Source Definition, allowing users to change and improve the software. Even though there is some cost involved with open source software, both movements are fairly similar in that they promote free material for users by conveniently making it readily for them to use or amend.

When Paul Ginsparg set up the server ArXiv to make physics preprints freely accessible, the first building block for the movement was laid. The reason suggested for this is researchers already have the information they need from other relevant articles readily accessible to them. Researchers conducted a study by making some journal articles free to users while requiring a fee for other articles. They found the free articles were downloaded and read more but weren't cited more than the subscription based articles. According to Cornell graduate student Phillip Davis, they found that open-access publishing may reach more readers than subscription-access publishing, but there is no evidence that freely accessible articles are cited any more than subscription-access articles (Cornell University, 2008).

Peer review is the screening of a work to consider for publication. Within this topic, publishers make various claims that Open Access threatens peer review. "If OA is forced on them they will not be able to survive financially because they will discover that there is no stable long-term business model for OA publishing" (Poynder, 2006). I think this movement will tremendously affect academic research. Allowing researchers to freely read academic journals will help our world's growth in knowledge. Sharing each other's works with certain ideas and stances will allow for additional, maybe even more significant, ideas to form. The movement will assist authors get their research out to a larger number of people willing to read about their findings in order to assist their own research. With this movement does come some issues related to authorship rights. The movement will have an affect on individual authorship, priority, and especially ownership. Peter Suber talks about various ways how the movement can maneuver around these negative affects. First, this access doesn't require the author to throw away all of their copyright privileges. They can use one of the Creative Commons licenses or compose their own licenses and attach them to their works (Suber, 2004). "When copyright holders consent to OA they consent in advance to the unrestricted reading, downloading, copying, sharing, storing, printing, searching, linking, and crawling of the full-text of the work" (Suber, 2004).

After finishing my research, I believe this movement is a masterfully developed concept that has potential to aid students and professionals with their research and help extend their knowledge of certain sciences. Allowing for academic journals to be available online for everyone to read, disregarding any barriers that previously came with it, would be a significant improvement for our societies research profile. The movement benefits so many professions and institutions such as authors, readers, libraries, universities, and funding agencies. Sand of the Sahara - A LASIK Complication

LASIK is a refractive surgical procedure that reshapes the cornea to focus light on to the retina. It is performed by creating a flap in the epithelium (outer) layer of the eye with either a lathe or laser, called Intralase. The underlying tissue is then reshaped with a laser to a predetermined arrangement in order to eliminate refractive conditions. It is designed to treat nearsightedness (Myopia), farsightedness ( Hyperopia) and astigmatism. It does not, however eliminate the need for reading glasses in those over forty. The surgery can only correct one distance at a time.

The procedure is a very effective, however there is no guarantee that there will not be any residual refractive power, or that the person my not regress requiring glasses in the future. While there are several possible deleterious side affects of the surgery, one of the most serious and potentially vision threatening is called DLK which stands for Diffuse Lamellar Keratitis. It is also know as Sand of the Sahara since it often appears like sand dunes in the Sahara desert.

This condition arises when inflammatory cells migrate into, and under the corneal flap. Depending on the location of the cells, the vision may be normal or severely reduced. Glare is often present, and in some cases the individual will present with ocular discomfort. Traditional therapy has been to prescribe strong steroid eye drops such as Pred-Forte every hour, and closely follow the patient for a reduction in these inflammatory cells. This may take days or even weeks to completely resolve. In some cases, the cells remain under the flap indefinitely.

In cases where the flap was created by a lathe, there is a gradual slope from the point of contact between the lathe and the corneal bed. This slope permitted this cell migration under the flap. It was a fairly constant degree of DLK in cases that were predisposed to acquiring this condition. Intralase, by comparison results in a step off the peripheral cornea to the corneal bed. One would think that this sharp step would reduce the number of cases and severity of DLK as compared to those with the lathe. Interestingly, DLK is more prevalent in patients who have had Intralase performed, as compared to the lathe. In either situation the cells present a problem that must be addressed.

According to Dr. Theirry Hufnagel of the Stahl Eye Center located in New York, the best treatment is to go back into surgery and lift the flap. Once the flap is once again separated from the corneal bed, the underlying area is washed and bathed with saline physically removing all the cells. This is a simple procedure, but the most effective way to completely, quickly and safely eliminate all the inflammatory cells. It also prevents any secondary complication that might arise from use of the steroid eye drops. In Dr Hufnagle's opinion, it is the best way to remediate the DLK .

This procedure is not performed by most refractive surgeons, and only those very skilled and experienced employ it. As always, one should only have surgery with doctors who know all the techniques to deal with post surgical complications.
